The best time to visit North Macedonia is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild, perfect for sightseeing, hiking, and exploring cities, with fewer tourists than in summer.
Spring (April–June) 🌸 – Mild temperatures (15–25°C), Blooming flowers and lush greenery make the landscapes look amazing, especially around Lake Ohrid and the national parks.
Summer (July–August) ☀️ – Hot (30–35°C), ideal for enjoying Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa but can be crowded. Skopje and other inland areas can get quite hot.
Autumn (September–October) 🍂 – Warm days, cool nights, the fall colors make the scenery even more stunning, especially in the mountains. Plus, there are way fewer tourists around.
Winter (November–March) ❄️ – Cold and snowy, best for skiing in Mavrovo or Popova Shapka but not ideal for general sightseeing.
How To Get around
Getting around in North Macedonia in fairly easy and you have different options to chose.
🚗 Car Rental:
Renting a car is the best option if you want to explore at your own pace. The roads between major cities are in good condition and easy to navigate, and parking is generally available. However, driving in Skopje can be hectic. A car also gives you the flexibility to reach scenic spots like Mavrovo National Park, which are harder to access by public transport.
Driving in North Macedonia requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your national driver’s license is not in English or does not use the Latin alphabet,
You’ll need a Green Card (international motor insurance certificate) to drive in North Macedonia if your vehicle is registered in a Non-EU countries. If required it you can request a Green Card from your insurer before traveling. or buy temporary border insurance at North Macedonian border crossings.
🚍 Bus:
Buses in North Macedonia are a great option for budget travelers, providing an affordable way to get around. The bus network connects all the major cities like Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola, Prilep, and Strumica, making it easy to hop between popular spots.
The main bus companies are Galeb, Trankop, and Flixbus, and you can check out schedules.
The only way to book your ticket online is with Flixbus, otherwise you’ll need to buy it directly at the bus stations. Routes to smaller towns might have limited schedules
