Best things to do in Khiva

Khiva entry ticket
A single entry ticket for Khiva costs UZS 200,000 (15 euros / 16 dollars) per person and is valid for two days (in 2024).
However, some attractions require separate fees: the Islam Khodja Minaret (UZS 100,000), the tower near the Ark (UZS 100,000), walking along the city walls (UZS 20,000), and the Pahlavon Mohammed Mausoleum (UZS 25,000).
Kalta Minor Minaret
The Kalta Minor Minaret is one of Khiva’s most eye-catching sights, covered in stunning blue and turquoise tiles. It was meant to be the tallest minaret in Central Asia, but construction stopped when the ruler died, leaving it short but still impressive. Despite never being finished, its vibrant colors make it a standout in Itchan Kala. Today, it’s one of the most photographed spots in Khiva and a must-see on any visit
Juma Mosque
The Juma Mosque, a stunning piece of history dating back to the 10th century.
What makes it special? Its 218 beautifully carved wooden columns that give the place a mystical, peaceful vibe. Take your time wandering through the dimly lit hall, soaking in the calm atmosphere as sunlight sneaks in through small openings in the ceiling.

Tach Khauli Palace
Built in the 19th century, this palace, known as the “Stone House,” was home to Khiva’s khans and is packed with intricate blue tiles, carved wooden pillars, and stunning ghanch. Commissioned by Allakuli Khan (1832–1841), it has over 150 rooms, including a mosaic-covered harem and the throne room, where rulers once met foreign guests. The northern wing has handicraft exhibitions, while the southern wing is a maze of hidden spots, featuring an aivan (covered portico), yurt bases, and a 19th-century carriage. Rumor has it the first architect was executed for not finishing it fast enough!
Kuhna Ark Fortress
The Kuhna Ark Fortress is where Khiva’s rulers once lived, and it’s packed with history. Inside, you’ll find a throne room, a mosque, and some amazing tilework.
The best part? Climbing up for epic views over Itchan Kala, with minarets and domes stretching out in every direction. It’s the perfect spot to soak in Khiva’s past and snap some amazing photos.

Islam khoja minaret
The Islam Khoja Minaret is the tallest in Khiva, soaring 57 meters above the city and offering epic panoramic views. Its blue and turquoise tilework makes it one of the most eye-catching spots in Itchan Kala.
The climb up the narrow staircase is a bit of a workout, but the views at the top are totally worth it.
Built in the early 1900s, it mixes classic Khivan and Persian styles, giving it a unique look. Whether you climb it or just admire it from below, this minaret is a must-see in Khiva!

Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum
The Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum is one of the most stunning spots in Khiva, dedicated to a local hero who was a poet, philosopher, and even a wrestler!
Its bright turquoise dome and intricate tilework make it a real eye-catcher in Itchan Kala. Inside, the peaceful vibe and beautiful decorations make it a great place to soak in Khiva’s history.

How to get to Khiva
Book your train ticket well in advance.
Train from Tashkent
This is the night train, unique and authentic way to experience Uzbekistan. The journey will last around 14 hours and 40 minute

Train from Bukhara
The journey will last about 6 hours and 30 minutes.
The cost of the ticket varies between $15 and $25. Please check the official website for the most accurate price.
The train arrives at a 15-minute walk from the old Khiva
Taxi from Bukhara
Another way to travel from Bukhara is by taxi.
In this case you can make stops at the Khorezm fortresses. These ancient fortresses, over a thousand years old, once guarded the Khorezm region.
If you choose to visit the fortresses, the journey takes around 6-7 hours, but if you go directly to Khiva without stopping, it takes about 5 hours.
For the best fare, we recommend booking a taxi through the tourist center or asking your hotel to arrange it for you ( not all hotels offer this service).
Flight from Tashkent
The flight will last 1 hour and 30 minutes and will land in Urgench (31 km from Khiva).
From here, you can either take a train, which takes about 30 minutes, or a taxi, which gets you there in around 40 minutes.
